Student Evaluation of Instruction & Course

Thanks to an agreement with the University of Missouri Provost's office, ARC offers scanning and scoring of Student Evaluation of Instruction & Course forms (previously known as Instructional Course Evaluations (I.C.E) A through H for MU instructors at no cost to instructors. Forms may be picked up at our campus office, located in 112 Townsend Hall, at the corner of Conley Avenue and 6th Street. You may request custom forms other than those included in our standard package, but custom forms are not covered by our agreement with the Provost. A signed Internal Order Form (IOF, formerly called an Interdepartmental Order Form), must accompany a request for these forms.

There is a new ORANGE identification cover sheet for all teacher evaluations. The old BROWN cover sheets can no longer be scanned, so please discard them. You may order the new cover sheets with our evaluation order form or pick some up at our campus office, located in 112 Townsend Hall.

Student Evaluation of Instruction & Course forms are a series of eight evaluation forms designed to meet specific needs of instructors with varying classroom settings. The forms were adapted from evaluations from the Instructional Assessment Program, University of Washington, Seattle, by the Program for Excellence in Teaching for use at the University of Missouri. They form the backbone of the classroom evaluative process. Each form targets a specific class/course type:

Form A	Small lecture and discussion courses. Emphasis is on clarity and quality of explanations. Also included are items on classroom interaction.
Form B	Large lecture courses. Emphasis is on course organization and explanation.
Form C	Seminar-discussion courses. Emphasis is on quality of discussion, course organization, interest level.
Form D	Problem-solving courses, such as engineering. Emphasis is on explanations, student difficulties, quality of problems.
Form E	Skill-oriented, "hands-on" courses, such as art studio, social work field experience.
Form F	Discussion sections. Emphasis is on classroom interaction, explanations.
Form G	Lecture courses which strongly emphasize textbook and homework problems, such as math.
Form H	Laboratory instruction. Emphasis is on preparedness, organization, safety, level of interest.

Section V of each form offers response positions for eight additional items which may be specific to a course or which may be selected from a list of optional questions included in the instruction sheet. This option allows instructors to customize their evaluations.

The Individual Student Comments Sheet offers students an opportunity to respond to two open-ended questions: "What aspects of the teaching or content of this course do you feel were especially good?" and "What changes could be made to improve the teaching or the content of this course?" ARC provides these forms but not scoring services for the open-ended responses; faculty and departments handle scoring open-ended responses themselves.
